From information to action

Good decisions start with sources that are current, specific and authoritative.

Conditions vary by company size, federal state, sector and date. A strong research process separates official rules from commentary, national programmes from regional instruments, and orientation from professional advice.

Three lenses

01

Verify

Confirm conditions with the institution responsible for them.

02

Compare

Check definitions and dates before combining statistics.

03

Apply

Convert research into owners, deadlines and next actions.

Official statistics and definitions

Use Destatis, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, KfW Research and the Institut für Mittelstandsforschung for definitions, surveys and structural data. Always check the publication date and methodology before comparing figures.

A statistic is only useful when its definition matches the question. Record the population, reporting period, geography and method alongside every figure you save. A count of enterprises is not the same as a count of establishments, and SME data should not automatically be presented as a measure of all owner-managed firms. Keep the original source link so another reader can reproduce the comparison.

Funding and finance orientation

Start with KfW, the relevant state development bank and the Funding Database of the German federal government. Programme rules change, and applications frequently need to be made before a project begins.

Use a funding search to build a shortlist, then return to the responsible provider for programme conditions. Save the product name, project fit, required evidence and questions still to resolve. Do not compare instruments only on a headline amount: timing, financing structure and reporting can matter just as much. KfW’s business portal offers an official starting point for exploring relevant financing categories.

Digital transformation

Mittelstand-Digital centres provide practical information, demonstrations and events on AI, connected production, digital processes and cybersecurity.

Digitalisation resources work best when the search begins with an operating problem. Instead of collecting general AI material, identify a process and the outcome the team wants to improve. Look for demonstrations and guidance that match the available data and internal capabilities. Keep a separate record of technical claims that require testing in the company’s own environment.

Talent, training and recognition

The Federal Employment Agency, Make it in Germany, chambers and recognition portals help employers and international professionals understand recruitment, vocational training, immigration and qualification recognition.

For recruitment research, separate the employer’s operational brief from the individual applicant’s administrative pathway. Prepare questions about qualifications, language, onboarding and support, then check the relevant official guidance. Make it in Germany provides an employer-oriented starting point for recruitment processes. A general article cannot resolve every candidate’s circumstances, so record which questions need a case-specific answer.

Succession and company transfer

The nexxt-change platform, chambers, banks and specialist advisers support succession preparation and the search for suitable buyers or successors.

Succession research should cover continuity as well as transfer mechanics. Alongside market and financing information, collect a clear picture of the company’s customer relationships, leadership responsibilities and knowledge dependencies. KfW’s succession research can help frame the wider issue; the company still needs its own timetable and evidence. Use that distinction to keep general trends separate from decisions about a particular business.

Put the guide to work

Build a research brief someone else can use

A practical framework from Mittelstand United. Adapt these steps to your business, operating context and available evidence.

  1. 01

    Write the decision first

State what the research needs to help decide and when the answer is needed. This prevents an expanding collection of links from becoming a substitute for progress.

  2. 02

    Keep a compact evidence log

For each useful source, save its title, publication or reporting date, relevant finding and limitation. Distinguish the source’s conclusion from your own interpretation.

  3. 03

Turn uncertainty into a next action

Assign unresolved questions to a provider, adviser or internal owner. Finish with the evidence still required and the next review date, so the brief remains a working document.
